Course Introduction: The Revolt of 1857

Welcome to the course on The Revolt of 1857, one of the most significant uprisings in Indian history and a turning point in the struggle against British colonial rule. Often referred to as India's First War of Independence, this course will explore the causes, course, consequences, and legacy of the rebellion that shook the foundations of British authority in India.

Beginning in May 1857, with the uprising of Indian sepoys in the British East India Company's army at Meerut, the revolt quickly spread across northern and central India. Cities like Delhi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Jhansi, and Gwalior became epicenters of intense conflict. Leaders like Bahadur Shah Zafar, Rani Lakshmibai, Tantia Tope, Nana Sahib, and Begum Hazrat Mahal emerged as symbols of resistance.

In this course, we will:

  • Analyze the political, economic, social, and military causes of the revolt.
